Janmashtami celebrations fall on Thursday the
25th August 2016 this year. The day marks the celebration of Lord Sri Krishna's birthday. The festival is also known by Gokulashtami, Krishnashtami or Shree Krishna Jayanti.
The day is celebrated all across with great devotion and celebration. In Mathura and Dwaraka it is celebrated with great festivity. Rasa Leela is played to depict various feats of the lord.
Dahi Handi is celebrated on the next day, which happens to be 26th August this year.
Lord Sri Krishna was born in Rohini Nakshatra on Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Badrapada Masa, that is on the eighth lunar day of the dark half of Badrapada month of the lunar calendar. Janmashtami is hence celebrated on this day every year.
