Janmashtami:
Janmashtami celebrations fall on Thursday the 25th August 2016 this year. The day marks the celebration of Lord Sri Krishna's birthday. The festival is also known by  Gokulashtami, Krishnashtami or Shree Krishna Jayanti.

The day is celebrated all across with great devotion and celebration. In Mathura and Dwaraka it is celebrated with great festivity. Rasa Leela is played to depict various feats of the lord.

Dahi Handi is celebrated on the next day,  which happens to be 26th August this year.

Lord Sri Krishna was born in Rohini Nakshatra on Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Badrapada Masa, that is on the eighth lunar day of the dark half of Badrapada month of the lunar calendar. Janmashtami is hence celebrated on this day every year.

Ashtami tithi starts on 24th August at around 22:17 Hrs and will end at 20:07 Hrs of 25th August for Bangalore location.

Rohini Nakshatra this year is on 25th August from 12:05Hrs till 26th August 10:52 Hrs.
The Muhurta for the Nishita Kala Pooja that is the midnight worship of Lord Sri Krishna will be at 00:44 hrs which happens to be the night of 24th August.

Those who observe fast should have one time meal before the start of ashtami on 24th August and the Parayan or the end of the fast will be after the end of Rohini on 26th August.
